About the event

Integrated in our normal Pop Chorus session will be a 45-min workshop on a modern version of solfège and the Curwen hand symbols. This a musicianship class, and is an opportunity to also learn some basic music theory.

By identifying pitches with hand symbols, musicians are better able to get out of their heads and recall precise notes in a scale. The added advantage of this is that you no longer need to try and work out intervals between notes. You can simply spot the scale degree of the note (i.e. an 'A' in D Major is the fifth scale degree, or the dominant), sign the hand symbol for no. 5, and notice that the physical gesture helps you recall that pitch.

This method was made famous by Zoltán Kodály in the 20th Century and is used in virtually all countries that teach Western Classical Music other than the UK...…
